Exertion on Workshops and Tours

We offer workshops and tours of many different types, and they require differing amounts of activity, and thus they require different levels of fitness and experience. Below is a guide to how we define the exertion levels of our events.

Keep in mind that carrying camera gear requires additional effort when working on foot in open and wild spaces, so a normally moderate hike may actually feel more vigorous. Also note that when prudent and/or necessary, we invite a backcountry consultant and Wilderness First Responder to accompany the group on our more challenging expeditions.

If you have any concerns or questions about whether a particular workshop or tour is suitable for your health or fitness level, or for your physical abilities in general, we are happy to discuss the trip in more detail one-on-one.

Exertion Levels

Relaxed

Suitable for any able-bodied person, and even for some with limited mobility. We will work primarily near the cars, at overlooks and easily accessible areas, on boardwalks and paved paths, in flat and unchallenging locations.

Easy

Suitable for just about anyone. No “hiking” will be required, but walking might be. The terrain won’t be challenging, but may not be flat. We’re likely to move about more, a little further from where we park, likely on short, spacious, well-maintained trails, or on boardwalks of paved paths.

Moderate

Suitable for most attendees. We’ll venture away from the cars more often than not, including short hikes of up to a couple of miles round-trip, on trails that are at least moderately maintained, or perhaps even in urban environments on sidewalks and blacktop. The terrain or environment may be somewhat challenging, such as slight elevation gains, uneven footing, deep-sand environments, high altitudes that might require acclimation, unusually uncomfortable weather, etc.

Active

Suitable for energetic, relatively fit attendees. Hiking will almost certainly be involved, possibly in backcountry. Challenges may include trail difficulty, reasonable obstacles (e.g., logs, boulders), an uncomfortable environment, length of time to hike to shoot locations or acclimation.

Strenuous

Suitable for active, well-conditioned attendees. We will be hiking, likely in backcountry, and the trails will be challenging, potentially rugged, and sometimes we might be off-trail. Expect multi-mile hikes with uneven footing and/or notable elevation gain. Hiking and outdoors experience is a plus; a comfort with exertion, sweat and dirt is a must. Expect to get tired.
